والملك السعودي الجديد هو سلمان بن عبد العزيز آل سعود من مواليد 31 ديسمبر 1935 وهو الابن الخامس والعشرون من الأبناء الذكور للملك المؤسس عبد العزيز بن عبد الرحمن الفيصل آل سعود من زوجته الأميرة حصة بنت أحمد السديري.
وهو أحد أهم أركان العائلة المالكة السعودية حيث أنه أمين سر العائلة ورئيس مجلسها والمستشار الشخصي لملوك المملكة، كما أنه أحد من يطلق عليهم السديريون السبعة من أبناء الملك المؤسس.
تلقى تعليمه الأولي في مدرسة الأمراء بالرياض وختم القرآن كاملاً وهو في سن العاشرة في مدرسة الشيخ عبد الله خياط إمام وخطيب المسجد الحرام.
كانت بداية دخوله العمل السياسي بتاريخ 16 مارس 1954 عندما عين أميراً لمنطقة الرياض بالنيابة عن أخيه الأمير نايف بن عبد العزيز وبتاريخ 18 أبريل 1955 عين أميراً لمنطقة الرياض وظل في إمارة منطقة الرياض إلى 25 ديسمبر 1960 عندما استقال من منصبه.
وفي 4 شباط/فبراير 1963 أصدر الملك سعود بن عبد العزيز مرسوماً ملكياً بتعيينه أميراً لمنطقة الرياض مرة أخرى.
وبعد وفاة الأمير سلطان بن عبد العزيز ولي العهد نائب رئيس مجلس الوزراء وزير الدفاع والطيران والمفتش العام في 5 تشرين ثان/نوفمبر 2011 اصدر الملك عبد الله بن عبد العزيز أمراً ملكياً بتعيينه وزيراً للدفاع.
وبعد وفاة الأمير نايف بن عبد العزيز ولي العهد نائب رئيس مجلس الوزراء وزير الداخلية وبتاريخ 18 يونيو 2012 أصدر الملك عبد الله بن عبد العزيز أمراً ملكياً باختياره ولياً للعهد وتعيينه نائباً لرئيس مجلس الوزراء وزيراً للدفاع.
أصبح الأمير سلمان بن عبد العزيز ملكا للسعودية خلفا للعاهل عبد الله بن عبد العزيز، الجمعة، ليحمل راية المملكة في مرحلة دقيقة تمر بها منطقة الشرق الأوسط.
وكان سلمان بن عبد العزيز قد عين وليا للعهد في المملكة العربية السعودية بعد وفاة ولي العهد الأسبق الأمير سلطان بن عبد العزيز في أكتوبر 2011، ثم وفاة ولي العهد الذي خلفه في يونيو 2012 وهو الأمير نايف بن عبد العزيز.
وهو أول ولي عهد في السعودية يعيّن له ولي للعهد قبل وصوله إلى عرش المملكة، ففي نهاية مارس 2014 أصدر العاهل السعودي عبدالله بن عبد العزيز قرارا ملكيا عين بموجبه الأمير مقرن بن بعد العزيز وليا لولي العهد، وبموجب هذا القرار سيبايع الأمير مقرن وليا للعهد خلفا للأمير سلمان، كما تتم مبايعته ملكا للبلاد في حالة خلو منصبي الملك وولي العهد في الوقت نفسه.
وكان سلمان بن عبد العزيز أحد أهم أركان العائلة الحاكمة السعودية، فهو أمين سر العائلة ورئيس مجلسها، والمستشار الشخصي لملوك المملكة.
فالملك الجديد الذي ولد عام 1935 هو الابن الخامس والعشرون من أبناء الملك المؤسس عبد العزيز بن عبد الرحمن الفيصل آل سعود.
وبدأ الملك سلمان حياته السياسية في 1954 أميرا لمنطقة الرياض بالنيابة عن أخيه الأمير نايف بن عبد العزيز، ثم أصبح أميرا للرياض بشكل رسمي بعد عام واحد إلى أن استقال عام 1960.

وترأس سلمان بن عبد العزيز نحو 20 جمعية وهيئة خيرية على هامش حياته السياسية منها رئاسة مجلس إدارة دارة الملك عبد العزيز وأمين عام مؤسسة الملك عبد العزيز الإسلامية والمؤسس والرئيس الأعلى لمركز الأمير سلمان لأبحاث الإعاقة..
وتولى في حياته الكثير من المهام في مجالات الإغاثة خلال الأزمات التي شهدتها المنطقة في مصر والجزائر عام 1956وفي الأردن وفلسطين 1967، ورئيس اللجنة الشعبية لدعم المجهود الحربي في مصر وسوريا في أعقاب اندلاع حرب أكتوبر 1973.
